Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. Philippians 4:1

The first verse of the fourth chapter in Paul’s letter to the Philippians is actually a concluding sentence to his thoughts from the last verses of chapter three. Prior to today’s verse, Paul is telling the Philippians that he is still working toward his goal of being called heavenward in Jesus Christ. Paul tells the Philippians to stay the course, to not be discouraged, and to continue to work toward the goal of being with Jesus in heaven.

Paul’s supportive message to his friends and fellow Christians still resonates today. Too many times we stumble when trying to earn our heavenly reward, but by following Paul’s example, we should forget what is behind us and work toward what is ahead. Do not be disheartened if you happen to take a step back, as long as you continue to work toward the ultimate goal of being called to heaven. Therefore, brothers and sisters, do not set your mind on earthly things, but stand firm in the Lord!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for giving us another day to work toward better serving you and your mission here on Earth. We continue to ask that you pick us up when we stumble and help us to love and serve one another as your Son loved and served us. In Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
