Jesus woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased and there was a dead calm. He said to the disciples, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” Mark 4: 39-41
Early in his ministry, Jesus had been teaching a crowd by the lake when he told his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side”. A terrible storm came up and the disciples feared for their lives while Jesus slept in the stern of the boat. They woke him up and exclaimed “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” It was then that the scene described above played out. I don’t know about you, but I always identified pretty readily with the frightened disciples in this scene. “Jesus, what have you gotten us into? We’re about to die and you’re sleeping?” He quickly showed them that he was indeed in control, even over the elements of nature. He had led them on this course and he would see them safely through it. This was a demonstration of the authority given to him by God that must have been something of a game-changer for these men. They had already heard of and probably witnessed some of his healing miracles but this seems to affect them differently. This man is not only a great healer and teacher, he commands the wind and sea in order to rescue them! He is the same Lord with the same heart toward his followers today.
Prayer: Lord, help us to remember just who you are and the power that you have to guide and protect us. Help us to trust and have faith in the One who commands the wind and sea and has called us his own. Amen
